I have a few specialisms; primarily stress. This means that I ask what helps people cope with work that can be emotionally demanding, what aspects of work make people feel stressed and how can we help improve people’s working lives.
I also look at what helps people learn the skills they need to do their jobs successfully and how can improve training and learning for jobs where people need to retain a lot of knowledge or skills.
-
My Typical Day:
I usually start at around 9am if I am working from home and spend the day developing learning materials for budding psychologists or working on consultancy projects for organisations.

I get up and walk my dogs, wake my daughter and have breakfast while reading the news on my iPad (keeping current is important in occupational Psychology!). I take my daughter to school and then usually head home to work from home, or into the office starting my day at 9am.
My morning usually consists of preparing learning materials for teaching and meeting with students, unless I am in the classroom teaching budding psychologists! some days though I visit organisations to learn about their work and discuss any particular issues they are having that they need some help with (for example are lots of people going off sick with stress? are people demotivated?) these are the times where you get to play detective a bit and find out what aspects of the work, the environment might be causing these problems and develop solutions to them.
Lunch is usually at 1 though most days I try to work through lunch so I can finish early, or have lunch with friends so we can discuss ideas for new lectures, courses or research.
I normally finish at about 4.30 or 5pm

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would spend it on a Psychology Open Day where we could invite people to come into the university and experience aspects of being a professional psychologist.
