I took A-Levels in psychology, sociology and music, and got grades A*AC. But don’t worry if A-Levels aren’t for you! Most universities accept BTEC and Access qualifications for psychology degrees 🙂

I studied art, biology, psychology and general studies. I got A in art, B in psychology, C in biology and B in general studies. That B in general studies helped me to get my place at Liverpool uni so those subjects can help!

I graduated from a United States high school, so the educational system is a bit different – in my final year, I took advanced composition (a literature/essay writing course), advanced chemistry, American government, American literature, history, music and maths. Advanced courses are perhaps most similar to A levels, as they are equivalent to 1st year college? I got As in all the courses apart from American literature, which I failed as I didn’t submit my final essay in time (I forgot to post it from our music trip).

I actually got a D in my A’ Level Psychology. I was suffering migraines at the time and got an aura (neurological visual breakdown) just as I was starting my paper. I couldn’t see properly so did the best I could but it was a struggle. And I couldn’t get mitigating circumstances in retrospect.
So I had to go through clearing to get a Psychology degree place as my grades were lower than expected. I did this though and it wasn’t the end of the world and I got to where I needed to be. So work hard but don’t give up, even if you hit some barriers. There is a way round most things!

I am really heartened to see Melanie’s answer because her story is similar to mine; I got a C in Psychology and the rest of my A-levels were Ds. After A-Levels, I worked as a care assistant for a couple of years before going to university to study psychology. My academic CV was far from ideal, but when I applied to university they gave me a chance because by that point I had gained some ‘life experience’ before becoming a ‘mature student’ and was determined to succeed. As Melanie says, keep pursuing your dream even if you hit some barriers; success is not just about the end goal, its also about persistence and how you grow as a person along the way.

I got 3 Cs in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and did an extra GCSE in Additional Maths and got an A at the same time. These actually really helped for my degree – even though I ended up as a Social Psychologist and not a biological or neuropsychologist :). I was able to get to grips with the statistics side of the degree fairly easily. I did philosophy in my first year of my degree and that I struggled with as it was so far away from the sciences I studies at A level.
